How Forensic Data Can Reveal Crucial Information To Crime Investigators
Forensic data is the name given to any information that has been uncovered as a consequence of a forensic investigation. It is frequently used to signify the data found in computer storage systems after the user believed they had deleted it. Forensic science has expanded greatly in recent years and, as a result of technological advances, investigators are able to retrieve such information. These advances have happened as a result of improvements in forensic technique, and also as a result of technology within society providing more possible outlets for the science to be used. These include computers and cell phones which are routinely used by those who are regularly involved in criminal activities.
The most important forensic items of data are often those which are found at the crime scene. In past eras, criminals could afford to use bare hands and leave fingerprints behind, and they could also feel confident that any body residue would not yield any clues. This is no longer the case. It is widely believed, for example, that the infamous Jack The Ripper murders in Victorian London would have been solved had the detectives had access to fingerprinting technology.
This is possible, although it has to be borne in mind that many serial killers of the twentieth century were not apprehended until they had killed far more victims than the five attributed to the Ripper, and that many crimes of that century also remain unsolved. What is certain is that the detectives would have had a greatly increased chance of apprehending the killer. As well as fingerprinting, we now have the ability to analyze hair left at a crime scene, or even saliva left in a cigarette butt.
The forensic data which is most often referred to by that name is that which is uncovered from computer systems using techniques which are known to those who study computers and know how they work, but which are unknown to many ordinary computer users. Many criminals simply do not realize that data which is erased when the Recycle Bin is emptied is not actually removed from the hard drive. The indicators which point to it are removed, but the data itself can still be read from the memory addresses until it is overwritten by fresh material.
The same techniques used to extract forensic data from computer systems can also be used on most related electronic equipment. Many of the small hand held devices which use computer technology can also be analyzed in the same way. This includes the ubiquitous cell phone, which many people use without realizing the risk of messages being intercepted. To this, you can add the risk of erased call lists and SMS messages being left in the memory following nominal erasure. The lists of calls, missed calls, and numbers from the memory bank can be amongst the most useful of all forensic data.
